HISTORY OF POMERANIANS

Pomeranians are categorized as a Splitz-type and were descended from the sled-pulling dogs of Arctic. The name Pomeranian is originated from Pomerania, a region bordering the Baltic Sea that is shared between eastern Germany and western Poland. Pomerania is where the first records of dogs similar to this breed were found. Early records shown that Pomeranians were used to herd sheep. They were mostly in white color and were considerably larger than today's standards.

Pomeranians were very popular in the Royal family. Queen Charlotte (German wife of King George III) had imported two Pomeranians, Phoebe and Mercury, in London during 1767. At that time, the size of Pomeranians were about 12 kg. Queen Victoria also liked Pomeranians. Her Pomeranian weighted only 6 kg. During the early 1900, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized this breed. During the thirties, different breeding lines were developed and the size of Pomeranians came down to 4 kg. They became a popular breed to enter competitions in Britain.

POMERANIANS' CHARACTERISTICS

I am sure that different owners of Pomeranians have different descriptions on their own Pom's characteristics and hobbies. Therefore, the following is some of my opinions on Pom's characteristics! =^o^=
  • Pomeranians are happy dogs that love to play with anyone (especially children)! They love to cuddle close, be petted and talked to!
  • Like to spend a lot of time sleeping and napping. However, they are very energetics at other times and love to take short walks.
  • Pomeranians are quite intelligent and can be taught very easily. They tend to bark a lot, therefore, they must be trained well when they were young. Other than that, they are very easy to be house trained.
  • One thing I learned from my dog is that Pomeranians are very clean and take great care of their own coats! They loved being groomed!
  • They don't have big appetite but like small snacks! (** For Snowy, if you have snacks on hand, she will do anything for you! **)
  • They make good watch dogs because of their acute hearing and alertness. Despite of their small size, they are loyal, very protective towards their owners and generally not frightened by larger dogs.
  • At last, they always possess "smiling face" expressions that make everyone very happy also!! =^0^=
